Our History
The first stone was laid on 4 April 1971, and the first Macedonian Orthodox Church “Saint Dimitrija Solunski” was completed, blessed and opened in 1972 in the city of Wollongong on the South Coast.
This was achieved through generous donations from our Macedonian community, bank loans, fundraising functions and activities organised by our hard-working volunteers.
Due to the growth of the Macedonian community in the Illawarra region, the Management Committee decided in 1996 to reconstruct and extend the church at an approximate cost of $1,000,000. On 22 February 1997, the beautifully reconstructed and enlarged church was blessed and officially opened for church services.

A Remarkable Interior
One of the most spectacular features of the church is its grand gold-plated chandelier, constructed with genuine Swarovski crystals. It hangs in the centre of the church beneath the large dome, which contains a hand-painted fresco of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
The Iconostasis
Completed in November 2011 at an approximate cost of $200,000, the magnificent iconostasis took more than two years to create. It was handcrafted from dry walnut wood by certified wood-carving craftsmen from the company Perdika in Bitola, Macedonia.
The intricate carvings depict biblical stories and the life of Jesus Christ. The iconostasis features thousands of carved figures and natural motifs, alongside icons of saints and apostles.
This beautiful work of craftsmanship is a treasured asset of our Macedonian community. Visitors are warmly invited to come and experience our church.

Saint Dimitrija Solunski
Our church is named after Saint Dimitrija Solunski, one of the revered saints of Orthodox Christianity. Saint Dimitrija was a Christian martyr associated with the city of Solun in the early fourth century.
Over the centuries, he became widely venerated as a warrior saint and protector of the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on 8 November and is traditionally known as Mitrovden.
